Artist Brief: Celebrate Chelston!

Torbay Culture would like to commission an artist(s) to work with the community of Chelston, Torquay, to celebrate the place and its people. We seek expressions of interest from creative practitioners with a commitment to social engagement. The successful artist will be informed by Chelston’s residents and will work with them to create an artwork or artworks, culminating in June 2020. Click through for the full details.

Writers on the Riviera

A new guide to Torquay’s literary heritage will reveal facts about Mrs Tiggy-Winkle, Bovril, war poetry, Frankenstein and evolution. 

Torquay’s literary connections will be brought to life in Writers on the Riviera, a beautifully illustrated printed map and guidewhich highlights writers who have taken inspiration from the area.

Torbay Culture Conference – Monday 30 September 2019

Torbay Culture is hosting a free conference on Monday 30 September at the Palace Theatre, Paignton. The conference is structured around Torbay’s ten-year Cultural Strategy Enjoy, Talk, Do, Be and the Great Place Scheme themes of Building Resilience, Changing Lives, Engaging Audiences and Shaping Place. We will explore common issues that are relevant for Torbay, allowing attendees to hear from inspirational voices and learn more about the changing context in which we are working.

Writers on the Riviera 

Writers on the Riviera will be a guide to Torquay’s literary heritage. It is currently being developed and will be the first guide in a series as part of a Cultural Tourism Project under Torbay’s Great Place Scheme.  

A beautifully illustrated printed map and guide of the town will celebrate literary figures connected to the area. 

Wavelength Open Call Commissions

We invite submissions from artists, designers and technologists for projects culminating in November 2019 as part of Eyeview, Torbay’s Great Place Scheme Cultural Programme. Wavelength will focus on experimental commissions with artists and technologists, culminating in a celebration of sound and light, illuminating Torbay, the overlooked and unexpected.

Dancing to Torbay’s dramatic landscape

A dance performance will bring together three dancers from Singapore with a Torbay community cast to perform in the dramatic landscape of Berry Head.

Silence Between Waveswill explore through movement and sound what it means to be ‘home’. The performance will feature in (extra)ordinary– ten days of performances, events and activities offering fresh perspectives on Torbay’s unusual places and spaces.

Cultural Tourism in Torbay

Torbay Culture, TDA and the English Riviera BID Company have together set their sights on increasing the number of cultural tourists coming to the Bay by developing holiday itineraries, trails and guides to share the real story of the area.
