Writers on the Riviera
Writers on the Riviera will be a guide to Torquay’s literary heritage. It is currently being developed, and will be the first guide in a series as part of a Cultural Tourism Project under Torbay’s Great Place Scheme.
A beautifully illustrated printed map and guide will celebrate literary figures connected to the area. The Writers on the Riviera is designed to encourage new cultural tourists to visit, as well as showing another side of the area to existing visitors and getting the local community exploring. The printed guide will be supported by audio, videos and online stories, so visitors can fully immerse themselves in the fascinating literary history of the area.
Agatha Christie is the most obvious story to tell, but she was in great company, with the likes of Alfred Tennyson, Oscar Wilde, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Charles Dickens, Mary Shelley and Charles Kingsley, to name but a few, visiting or living in Torquay.
Writers on the Riviera will be available in the autumn. Next in the series will be Artisans & Makers, and a guide to Speeding Up & Slowing Down – the adrenalin-fuelled break or the super-relaxing one.
