Dancing to Torbay’s dramatic landscape

Dancing to Torbay’s dramatic landscape

A dance performance will bring together three dancers from Singapore with a Torbay community cast to perform in the dramatic landscape of Berry Head.

Silence Between Waveswill explore through movement and sound what it means to be ‘home’. The performance will feature in (extra)ordinary– ten days of performances, events and activities offering fresh perspectives on Torbay’s unusual places and spaces.

The project is commissioned by Torbay Culture through the Great Place Scheme and created by Richard Chappell Dance, whowill work with local dancers to explore dialogue around international collaboration, connecting two places across the sea.

Richard Chappell said:
“The performance will draw inspiration from the coast, the tide and the rich sentiment attached to listening to the natural rhythm of the sea.

“When I brought Shaw, one of the Singaporean dancers, to Berry Head for the first time, it was heart-warming to see the awe on her face experiencing this amazing landscape – the vastness of the blue looking out over the Bay in one direction, and in the other direction, a place which is home to a lot of people. The combination of embracing the horizon and far away places across the sea with our beautiful local environment and community is at the heart of this creation

“Through this project, we’re celebrating our local culture as well as opening Torbay to the outside world.”

Local dancers will participate in workshops and then perform alongside Shaw En Chew, Faye Tan and Shaun Lim, performers from Singapore.

The dancers will perform with the sounds of local voices. Composer Samuel Hall will create a soundscape of the voices of people from Torbay describing their memories of Berry Head, their relationship with the sea and communication over long distances.

The project is commissioned by Torbay Culture through the Eyeview (extra)ordinary programme as part of Torbay's Great Place Scheme. It is supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England and the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

The performance of Silence Between Waveswill take place at 3.30-4.30pm on Sunday 9 June at the Napoleonic Fort, Berry Head National Nature Reserve, Brixham TQ5 9AP. Further information about events in the (extra)ordinary programme is available on Torbay Culture’s Eyeview website
