Torbay Culture responds to House of Commons DCMS Committee covid-19 inquiry

As part of the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) Inquiry into the Impact of Covid-19, Torbay Culture has submitted important evidence on behalf of Torbay’s cultural sector.

Parliament’s House of Commons DCMS Select Committee invited written evidence on the impact of Covid-19 on all sectors under their remit (including, but not limited to, culture and the creative industries; civil society; sport; tourism; heritage; publishing, media and journalism; telecoms). In particular, the Committee asked:

  1. What has been the immediate impact of Covid-19 on the sector?

  2. How effectively has the support provided by DCMS, other Government departments and arms-length bodies addressed the sector’s needs?

  3. What will the likely long-term impacts of Covid-19 be on the sector, and what support is needed to deal with those? Inquiry into the impact of Covid-19 on DCMS sectors

  4. What lessons can be learnt from how DCMS, arms-length bodies and the sector have dealt with Covid-19?

  5. How might the sector evolve after Covid-19, and how can DCMS support such innovation to deal with future challenges?

Our response to these questions was informed by calls for information from local organisations and independents since the beginning of the crisis, regular Zoom conversations at a new What Next? chapter for Torbay, and direct communication with sector partners. Torbay Culture’s board members were also asked to comment and inform this response, as well as other members of the Torbay Together strategic partnership.

We continue to be in touch with Arts Council England, the National Lottery Heritage Fund, the national What Next? movement and our local MPs to ensure that Torbay’s situation is represented in national recovery planning. You can download the Torbay Culture response to the call for evidence here:

The Inquiry remains open for evidence until Friday 19th June and we would encourage you to send in details of your own experience through their web portal.
