'Voices From Our Home' - inviting new perspectives on shared local heritage
As part of our work to support the recovery of Torbay’s culture and heritage sector, Karen Marshall is managing a project - provisionally called ‘Voices From Our Home’ - to share heritage based stories from the English Riviera.
This short film (about 6 minutes) is intended to celebrate and share the culture and stories of local minority voices - including those from black, Asian, and other minority ethnic communities - for whom Torbay is home. The reason for ‘Voices From Our Home’ is we recognise there are members of our local communities who have not had the opportunity to share their perspectives on the bay’s fascinating heritage.
The film may be about a person, a family or a community in the area. A measure of the success will be a high production value film that the local community is proud of, representative of real lives, and lived experiences. Supported by the Culture Recovery Fund award to Torbay Culture, our aim is for the film to be authentic, meaningful, and stand the test of time.
Can you share your perspective on something from Torbay’s history?
Is there a lesser known part of Torbay’s heritage you feel others should know about?
What can we learn from the past, to improve our life in the future (we’re thinking post pandemic)?
If this is something which you want to be involved with, please email: [email protected]
This work is part of Torbay Culture’s support for our local culture and heritage sector, and is funded by the Culture Recovery Fund for Heritage. The Culture Recovery Fund is being delivered by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Historic England, using funds provided by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.
Our Culture Recovery Fund action plan includes:
One to one advice surgeries for managers of heritage/culture organisations; and for individual practitioners
Action planning for the new Torbay Heritage Strategy by Heritage Arts and People in partnership with Torbay Council
Business planning and equipment for the grade II* listed Cockington Court
A film exploring Agatha Christie’s passion for the bay’s natural heritage specifically swimming

A note on the language we use: we have used the same terms that the government and National Lottery Heritage Fund uses in respect of black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) communities, as this is in common use and currently widely understood, however we keep this under review.
