Updated heritage strategy - public consultation
Torbay Council commissioned an independent heritage consultancy, Heritage Arts and People (HAP) in January 2020 to update the local area’s heritage strategy. The new draft Torbay Heritage Strategy is the result of that significant review of heritage across the locality.
‘Heritage is not something static, lying hidden to be discovered, admired and conserved. It is a part of the lives of the people, and it shapes the ways a people meet new challenges and helps then adapt to survive’
- Lee Kuan Yew, founding Prime Minister of Singapore
Conducted over several months it involved consultation with local residents, partner organisations, elected Council members, officers and services. It also involved talking with external partners, including Historic England, National Lottery Heritage Fund, National Trust and the South West Heritage Trust; and takes into consideration changes in local and national plans and policies.
Part of this review process was an online residents’ consultation during February which received 745 responses. It found that local people care deeply about special places, and are enthusiastic about opportunities for greater engagement as visitors, volunteers and event attendees. This strategy has been created in response to those priorities, concerns and ideas.
Torbay Council and partners are now keen to hear your views on the draft strategy which can be viewed here TORBAY COUNCIL CONSULTATION

The consultation will remain open for four weeks until Sunday 23 August 2020.
